Friday on Thursday

Most people still have one more day left to work this week but I am off tomorrow so today feels like a Friday to me. When you are on staff at church, your work week begins on Sunday making the end of a five day week on Thursday.

So tomorrow, I will do the weekly household things like laundry, vacuuming, and updating the checkbook. And I will definitely do what the clock suggests!

Apple Cart Turn Over

As I mentioned yesterday, our church services were canceled for today. Our services are telecast on the local network each week. They are a week delayed but we had it on TV this morning. Last week's sermon was great so I didn't mind hearing a repeat. Now we are enjoying our day of rest - - which involves moving furniture! But it is a rest from our usual activities.

I don't know if Newton's Third Law of Physics could be applied in our house - - - the equal and opposite reactions idea - - - but there is surely a law of "decorating" that when one piece of furniture is added or moved, it leads to another and another and another being moved. That means we are in a bit of an "Apple Cart Turn Over" today.

It hasn't been as difficult as this. (No, these are not our neighbors or us.)

But it hasn't been as easy as this either. (hmmmm, maybe we should claim this picture. It takes 25 years off our lives!)

First we moved a shelving unit (not our shelves pictured).

Then a desk (not ours pictured) has come up from the basement to go in the guest/craft room.

Moving the desk allowed my husband's treadmill to be placed facing the TV. Now if we can figure out how to get his OLD heavy TV downstairs, he will be very excited. I suggested the wheelbarrow because that TV is bulky and too heavy to carry around the house or down the stairs. And again, that's a story for another day!

Shoveling

We still had snow on our subdivision roads today.
However we did not have one of these.

We understand that there were plows on the main roads and those roads were cleared. The way our driveway and road got clear today was with shovels. My husband and older daughter did the driveway. Then he and I did the road and hill coming to our driveway. He figured it was about 200 feet in all. We are so thankful that this is not something we do on a weekly basis during the winter. It's fun exercise once in a while but would be another stress to deal with on a regular basis if we lived farther north. Also, he was able to get my car out of the neighbor's yard at the bottom of the hill (where I parked it last night). It's back in the driveway.

Because the roads aren't dry and clear - - - and there is a slight possibility of more precipitation tonight, many churches have canceled services tomorrow to help avoid falls in the parking lots. It is very rare that churches close their doors on Sunday in Cleveland.

One fun project that was completed today was the assembling of brushed nickel shelves for our kitchen. Ours actually have 5 shelves with the top one leaving some of the post showing so we could still easily reach some items up there. It holds double the amount of items we had on the wooden shelves in the same space. However, the kitchen looks larger - - even with a bigger shelving unit - - - probably because of the open design. One of our next decisions to make will be what paint color do we want? Most likely our cabinets will be white. I think I want to look at some glass tiles for over the counter tops but I am not sure. First we will have to remove layers of wallpaper - - but that's a story for another day.

Now we're finishing off the day watching "Miss America". They are very talented, hard-working young women. Read a biography of Heather Whitestone sometime to learn what a busy schedule these girls have the year of their reign.

Home Sweet Home

It is wonderful to be home - - safely inside a warm house. We actually got the forecasted snow. Often, it will not happen because when our weather hits the mountain, it will sometimes divert around us. Unfortunately that did not happen today. Many, many children and youth are excited but commuters had a horrific time getting home. Our road crews will treat the roads but you generally don't see snowplows like you do up north. So we wait for a thaw on our secondary roads.

One of our cars is at the bottom of our hill in a neighbor's yard. Our neighbor across the street was able to drive our new car up our hill into our garage. My husband got almost to the top and the momentum quit due to the ice of the melted snow. You don't want to know the number of attempts that were made. However, backing back down and up another hill, R was able to get enough speed to make it the last few feet to the top.

So we are house-bound a day or two and not complaining. We have plenty of projects and when we're not working, there are plenty of books to read. I am praying that we don't lose any power though!

Sorry I don't have pictures to show you this time since we have a significant accumulation to make a pretty photograph. . . . . I still haven't taken the camera anywhere to be fixed.

Called

This is my friend, Heather's, post. It will be a fun, interesting, and spiritually challenging read. Our family loves Heather. She has been on the church spelling bee team with us for the past four years - - the last three years, her team has been first place. The spelling bee was a fund-raiser to raise money for GED scholarships for a community literacy program. Heather is a beautiful woman inside and out. That's why I wanted you to meet her, too.

BUSY Week

Time just keeps on flying by, doesn't it? And that's what my fingers are going to do - - fly over this keyboard just to get you updated on what we've been up to this past week or more.

A week ago Thursday, my daughters and I went to the home of some "crafty" friends. The husband makes beads from melted glass. I have seen him do it with a blowtorch type tool and just drip and attach glass in different designs to make beautiful beads. He used to sell them at craft fairs but seems to be retired from it now. I wish I could take some pictures but I really need to take time to figure out where to take my camera to get it fixed. That won't be difficult if I put it on my list of things to do - - but it doesn't seem to be taking priority right now.

And you would think you were on the wrong blog if I didn't mention food - right? We have spent two Sundays in a row at Mamaw's! She is our son-in-law's grandmother. Yesterday was to celebrate her birthday. Last week was to celebrate mine. She makes our dessert request. Mine was yellow cake with her homemade fudge icing. She basically takes a fudge recipe and cooks it just short of it hardening. The next week, I took banana splits ingredients. At least the fruit was a bit of a balance to the syrups and sugars??!!

A week ago, our older daughter prepared Nacho Salad foods. There's another big YUM! The best part was taking the Velveeta-Rotel Dip and putting it on top of the salad rather than grated cheese. We did not check our cholesterol after any of those meals. But once again, notice that we had raw produce to balance some of that out.

Then last Thursday, the same daughter and I attended Cooking Live at our church. It is a once a month themed cooking demonstration with samples given out for five dishes. Over 50 people generally attend and it's a lot of fun plus some great information.

And regarding work, we have begun our adult reading program. I think 99 people are presently signed up. We are hoping for 200. It's fun. Most of them are regular library patrons but these promotions generally bring in some new friends for us to meet. Also, since we require everyone to read at least one non-fiction book, it encourages them to read some Christian Literature they might not usually pick up.

Wonderful Weekend!

It is my birthday today - - - not something a person usually advertises --- especially when they have just turned one year less than 60 . . . . !!! How did it happen so fast? I read on an email forward or a blog that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. I will confirm that feeling.

So here's what we've done the last two days. Yesterday I needed to be in Chattanooga for an appointment so afterward, I went to Hamilton Place Mall and visited a few retail businesses. Then I headed over to Lifeway Bookstore to buy some more titles for our FBC Library. Lunch was soup and salad at Jason's Deli. Going home the "back" way (rather than I-75) took me by Couch's BBQ . Take-out from there gave us great sandwiches last night.

Then I started some research that my husband completed today. Our younger daughter and her husband are still having to stay in town during the week due to the long commute around the Ocoee rockslide. They have been at his parents and enjoying it - - - - but to give them some variety and also to give his parents a bit of a break, we went out and bought a bed to go in our spare room. That room was going to be a guest room eventually and now it will be by next weekend. The walls still need painting but it has heat and a good roof and that is more important than paint.

Not everyone in the world can claim that right now. The situation in Haiti is heartbreaking and almost incomprehensible. I don't know why some of us have an easier life than others but I praise God HE is with us in any and all situations. Can I go there and help? Probably I would be more of a liability than an asset if I were onsite and people depended on me for tasks requiring stamina and strength. I tire easier and quicker than I used to. That is not an excuse I am looking for but it is the truth. It is good to know our limitations. However, I can support mission groups who are there year-round and especially an agency like Samaritan's Purse who is a GREAT first responder.

And jumping back to my personal world of celebration - - - my husband took me out for a delicious mid-afternoon meal at Heartland Grill in Dayton. We are stuffed - - - - and did not adhere to any diet today! Speaking of eating out with my husband, I caught my reflection in a mirror this week at Gardner's Market near my work and said to him, "I certainly look my age today!" Do you ever do that? You think you look like what you want to look like - - - and then catch your image unexpectedly and reality almost knocks you down?!!!!
